A Steeplechase Success

A Steeplechase Success!! I worked it all day long at the derby with my super cute pink (naturally) hat with white and pink (naturally) flowers. Granted, there were women with much more eccentric and elaborate hats, but I don’t think theirs cost only $25 or will be able to be used again in the future..nope, no way.

So, here’s how I did it: I bought a simple pink beach hat at Marshalls and some faux flowers at Michaels…and viola! Derby Hat!

No, not that easy…but almost! I sewed the ribbon around the hat using a whip stitch, so that after the derby, I could remove the flowers and ribbon and still be able to sport a pink hat at the beach. I made sure that when I was hot gluing the flowers to the hat, that the hot glue only touched the ribbon.

Hint: when you cut the flowers off their stem, you may need to use a tiny dab of glue to ensure that the layers of petals don’t separate from each other. Just a TINY dot of hot glue or craft glue (depending on your patience for drying time) between each layer and you should be fine!
